Hungary has some of the most elegant manhole covers in Europe. Perhaps there is a distant remembrance of the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Secessionist movement in Vienna in some of the decorative designs that are to be found in the streets of Hungarian towns. Normally this website concerns itself with the sewerage and water supply covers and ignores the more modern gas, electricity and telecommunications covers, but who can resist the Magyar Posta and Magyar Telekom covers shown below. A pity therefore that even here the ubiquitous PAM covers, the McDonalds of the manhole world, are making inroads.
